Gutter Guard Maintenance Checklist

Gutter guards dramatically reduce maintenance — they don't eliminate it entirely. Here's what to check by season, and how it varies by guard type.

Spring

• Brush off any surface debris (pollen, seed pods) that accumulated over winter — most relevant for micro-mesh and reverse-curve guards
• Check foam guards for compaction or UV degradation from winter weather
• Confirm downspouts are draining freely after spring rains

Summer

• Inspect after major storms for debris buildup on top of the guard surface
• Trim overhanging branches that drop debris directly onto guards
• For brush guards, check bristles haven't flattened or shifted out of place

Fall

• The highest-debris season — even the best guards benefit from a visual check after peak leaf-drop
• Micro-mesh: a light brush-off is usually all that's needed
• Foam guards: this is a common time to replace foam that's degraded over the year
• Confirm downspout extensions are directing water away from the foundation before winter freezes

Winter

• Watch for ice dam formation in cold climates — guards don't prevent ice dams, which form from attic heat loss, not debris
• Avoid climbing on icy ladders/roofs yourself — have a professional handle any needed winter inspection
